Abstract
The purpose of this study was to estrimate a mean value of umbilical arterial blood Po2, Pco2 and pH in newborn infant with clincally normal and complicated pregnancy and labor, and to observe any correlation between those values and Apgar score. Thrity-six infants born at the Seoul National Unviersity Hospital were subjected to this study. About 2ml of umbilical arterial blood was collected via doubly clamped cord immediately after the delivery and before the first breath was taken. cord blood collection was made by a syringe coated with 0.2 - 0.3ml heparin. Immediately after blood collection, Po2, Pco2 and pH were determined with the help of blood gas analyzer Il 213. the mean value of the umbilical arterial blood Po2, Pco2 and pH of infants with clinically normal pregnancy and labor were 16.5 mmHg, 53.2mmHg and 7.279, whereas the same value in newborn infants with complicated pregnancy and labor such as toxemia of pregnancy and breech presentation were 11.8 mmHg, 54.5mmHg and 7.211. The average pH value of infants having Apgar scores 7 to 10 was 7.296, whereas the same value of infants with Apgar scores 2 to 6 was 7.173. The aveage Apgar score in infants with umbilical arterial blood pH 7.200 or above was 8.3 (3-10) and the same value was 4.5 (2-7) in infants with pH 7.199 or less.
